This book is a reference to designing transmission Unes and designing with transmission lines. It has evolved from my intercst in and desire to understand the design process and the many exceprions to the standard dcsign procedures. As I explored this, I found that the standard equations were not valid for the standard configurations. For example, it is very common to have embedded microstriplinc and off-ccnter stripline, yct the commonly used cquatíons have significant errors for diese configurations. What some may consider a mathematical exccption, in fact is common and introduces significant errors in the design. I found that the ncccssary references are spread out over dozens of texis and joumals over seventy years. As a result, many cngineers are using equations that are nearest at hand rather than the most correct available for their purpose. My goal became to fmd the most accurate and authoritauve anieles and extract the equations one needs for design. This seemed simple; however, it became a huge task of collectíng references, analyzing thcm, and attempting calculations to verify their completeness and accuracy. The result, I think, is one of the most complete and easy-to-use references available. This handbook compiles mese equations and references in a uniform formal for easy reference. It is meant to be a guide to making the calculations involved in highfrequency design and as such does not directly cover any EM fieid theory. There are several good EM texis listed in the references. The equations collected herein are so-called closed-form equations. Many of mese are exact solutions of the problem or of transformed versions of the problem. A few are the result of curve-fitting exact numerical solutions of Maxwell's equations. Where oniy curves are found in the references, CAE equations have been fit. These equations apply oniy in the ranges specified and are supplicd for convenience in computer designs. I have included material for the design ofcenain inductors and capacitors, which are not normally considcred transmission lines. This is important material to have available when designing in the 200 to 500 MHz región where transmission line lengths may be unwieldy and off-the-shelf lumped elements self-resonate.
