For intelligent identification and solution of problems arising during operation and maintenance of aircraft, it is essential that aviation personnel have a clear understanding of the physical principles involved. A study of aerodynamic principies help aviators remain aware of the capabilities and limitations of their aircraift. Maintenance personnel will be more efficient if they know about aircraft materials and structural principles. Most ofall, the safety staff should have a good basic knowledge of these subjects. It is the purpose of this publication to review the basic physics principles and the minimum mathematics required tu solve simple equations in the further study of aerodynamics, aircraft structures, and related subjects. This text is used in the USAF Fiying Safety Officer Course at the Universitv of Southern California. The information is presented in the form of a programmed learning text. It is designed for self study. Answers to the simple questions are found in the right hand margin. These should be covered with a two inch strip of opaque paper. The students should answer the question, then slide the opaque paper strip down to chcck their answer. Additional problems will be found at the end of each chapter. It is recommended that the student use a pocket calculator to solve the problems. If possible, the calculator should be capiible of extracting square roots and performing trigonometric functions.
